Are You Using These Products To Elimate Your Bad Breath
In most cases, banishing bad breath means improving oral hygiene; notable exceptions to this are breath problems caused by medical conditions, medications, tobacco usage or dietary habits.
Good oral hygiene starts with brushing your teeth: ‘Back in the day’ our grandparents had a narrow choice of toothbrushes that may have come in different colors but, other than that, were not much different from each other. Over the years, that basic, manual toothbrush has benefited from the experimentation of dentists and scientists and has turned into a tool that brushes teeth more effectively and more easily. Today, the manual toothbrush is still the best selling, most often used toothbrush but it has some stiff, high-tech competition.
Let’s take a look at the electric toothbrush. When it was introduced half a century ago, many people were very skeptical as to the lasting power of this innovation. Some individuals perceived it to be simply an expensive and largely useless substitute to a very simple procedure that everyone has been doing for decades anyway. But that was before they realized the advantages of this tool when it comes to dental hygiene. When you brush your teeth manually with a traditional toothbrush, you can probably perform about 400 to 500 brush strokes per minute. Electric toothbrushes could perform up to 10 times as fast, significantly increasing the efficiency of brushing.
With this very high speed, food particles that are otherwise left stuck in between the teeth and the gums are easily dislodged and cleaned out. The improvement is astonishing, but manufacturers were certainly not satisfied. Today, there are some electric toothbrushes that can reach speeds of more than 30,000 strokes per minute. These more powerful devices allow you to spend less time brushing while leaving your mouth more squeaky-clean than ever.
Even with the ’sonic’ cleaning action of today’s sonic toothbrushes, flossing hasn’t gone out of style nor is it any less necessary. Flossing removes plaque and food from places between the teeth that even the sonic action of the sonic toothbrushes won’t reach. There is an unbelievably wide variety of dental floss available: from unwaxed to waxed with mint, peppermint or no flavoring, from super thin, super strong filament style to tape style and there are dental floss holders to make it a less awkward procedure.
Most people either overlook cleaning their tongue or they just don’t know about it. However, scraping or brushing the bacteria and residue from food and drink off your tongue is one of the most effective oral hygiene treatments for halitosis. There are several different designs of tongue cleaners available beginning with your own toothbrush. Specialized tongue brushes and tongue scrapers do a better job than a toothbrush.
The process of cleaning the tongue is very simple. Basically, you’re just supposed to brush the surface of the tongue from the back to the front. Try to reach as far back as you can because this is where most bacteria and food particles accumulate. For people with a strong gag reflex, this may be a challenging in the beginning but you will eventually get used to it. Make sure that you press hard enough to get the bacteria off, but not too carelessly as to chafe your tongue.
Dozens of tongue cleaning products are offered in health shops all over the country. If tongue brushes or scrapers do not sound very appealing to you, you can also try one of the tongue spray products available today. These can kill the bacteria in the tongue while leaving a pleasant smell in your mouth.
Another very popular product for maintaining the freshness of your breath is the mouthwash. Hundreds of mouthwashes are commercially available, and these come in all sorts of flavors. While most of them can give you instant fresh breath, mouthwashes do not really offer a long-term solution for bad breath.
The vast majority of commercial mouthwashes will temporarily cover up your bad breath. These rinses do nothing to treat it and many of them, in fact, that contain alcohol, will actually contribute to your bad breath problem. The net effect of an alcohol-based mouthwash on your breath is negative — the alcohol is drying out your mouth and creating a great breeding ground for the kind of bacteria that contributes most to bad breath.
To avoid this problem, choose a mouthwash that contains stabilized chlorine dioxide instead of alcohol. This compound will very effectively neutralize the foul smell produced by oral bacteria. However, unlike other mouthwashes that contain alcohol, these products will not lead to dryness of the mouth.
Finally, there is the toothpaste. Toothpastes are generally used as a cleaning agent for the teeth. Some of them also leave a very thin protective layer over the teeth to prevent decay and cavities. Most of them also have mint or menthol flavors to aid in keeping the breath fresh.
All these products are essential for good oral hygiene but they are pretty much useless if utilized alone. The best way to have strong healthy teeth and fresh breath is to have a regular mouth-cleaning routine using all of the abovementioned products.
