Banish Bad Breath with These Six Methods
If you have ever smelled rotten eggs, or got an odor from a stink bomb which is a like a foul gas smell, you will know how bad they smell. Both these things smell of sulfur, which smells so bad that it makes a person gag. It is the same smell which emanates from a person who suffers from bad breath and that is what makes it so terrible.
What causes this sulfuric smell? It is anaerobic bacteria which is the culprit and which lives and thrives in an oxygen free place. These bacteria feed on food debris which is left in the mouth after eating and drinking. They break down the food particles and as the food gets digested by them, they emit sulfur which mixes with your exhaled breath and comes out from your mouth. If people around you get the smell they will avoid you, and some people may even tell you that you suffer from bad breath and even offer you a minty sweet. How can you get rid of this problem? There are six methods to free yourself from this problem.
Floss daily. No matter how well or how often you brush your teeth, some food particles will still stay stuck in between your teeth, away from the reach of your toothbrush’s bristles. If left in the mouth for a long time, these food particles will attract the odor-causing bacteria. Flossing is the only solution to get rid of these efficiently.
Brush your teeth and gum. Flossing your teeth does not replace a good tooth brushing, and it is imperative that you brush your teeth with good toothpaste for the recommended period of time. It is best to brush in the morning and evening as well as after meals and even snacks to get rid of bacteria before they have a chance to settle in.
Don’t forget to include your tongue in your oral care routine. Often the tongue is overlooked and it is a place where bacteria comfortably multiply. You can use the back of a spoon to scrape your tongue from the back especially. There are chances that you will something whitish. This is what the bacteria lives in and the cause of the bad smell. If you always include cleaning your tongue in oral care routine, you will greatly reduce the chances of getting bad breath from these bacteria. Regularly scrape and brush your tongue well.
Drink a lot of water. This will allow your mouth to produce enough saliva to wash away the bacteria that accumulate. There are some medications that will produce a feeling of dry mouth, which simply means that they decrease the amount of saliva your mouth produces. To keep dehydration of your mouth at bay, it is imperative that you make up for the lack of liquid in your mouth by increasing your liquid intake.
Choose your mouthwash wisely. Although mouthwashes are manufactured for the primary reason of keeping your breath fresh, some products actually do the opposite, such as the alcohol-based mouthwashes. At first, you will feel a very fresh sensation in your mouth. Eventually though, the alcohol content in the mouthwash will leave your mouth dry, allowing bacteria to thrive. Instead of eliminating the problem, this will then increase the risk of bad breath. When buying your mouthwash or other dental products, choose those that don’t contain alcohol. The same thing can be said for sugary gums. While chewing them, your saliva will flow and drive away the bacteria, which is good. But once you spit out the gum, the sugary residues will be left behind and all the eliminated bacteria will just come back twofold.
Keep your dentist on speed dial. Be sure you make and keep regular dental appointments with your neighborhood dentist. Regular check ups will prevent many dental diseases that increase the likelihood of bad breath. In addition to the foregoing, your dentist will be able to recommend further treatments, if bad breath is no longer manageable simply with brushing, flossing, and scraping.
