Helping Toddlers Solve Bad Breath Problems

by Darren Wumoult

It seems strange to think of the fact that toddlers would ever have problems with bad breath but a lot of parents have started noticing that their children are having a problem way before they are ready to start brushing their teeth and before they are able to use mouthwash.

If this is the case, what exactly can such parents do when they find out that their toddlers have bad breath? Are any products available which are safe enough to be used by such toddlers? Prior to giving an answer to these questions, it is essential to determine the reason why these toddlers have foul breath and other things that should be looked out for.

It is important to consider a child’s safety and health when considering the problem of toddlers’ bad breath as you do not want to give them any products that are meant for adults. This includes mouthwashes, rinses, and things such as this.

Many of these products contain alcohol or peroxide, both of which can be damaging to a baby’s developing system. There are more effective and much safer ways to address smelly breath in young children. When in doubt, you should always consult your family doctor or dentist.

You should remember that most situations of bad breath are usually caused by the things we eat and decaying bits of food remaining in the mouths which cannot be removed the way adults do so which is usually by flossing or brushing. A child still on the bottle may have bad breath due to the fact that the formula they are taking is drying on the insides of their mouth and creating a bad smell because it is giving a haven to bacteria.

Foods which are somewhat responsible for bad breath in adults such as broccoli, cauliflower, and other vegetables may also result in bad breath where young children are concerned. Such foods tend to give off various enzymes and chemicals which create a resultant bad odor.

In order to handle the problem of bad breath in toddlers, you have to ensure that they are properly hydrated, this way their saliva will be able to clear out the ingested food particles or dried out formula. Always keep a bottle or cup of water nearby so that your baby can have some water when they want it.

Some cases of smelly breath are caused by breathing through the mouth rather than the nose; this dries the mouth and causes halitosis. You may want to have your child checked for a blockage of the sinus cavity or sinusitis, post nasal drip, or any other condition that would cause improper breathing. Your pediatrician can also perform a thorough exam and give you a personal recommendation to combat this problem.

In conclusion, parents should not be too worried when their children experience bad breath. The thing that they need to do is to determine the root cause for it before applying the appropriate remedies to help eliminate bad breath in toddlers. That is the best and most effective way to go.
